TL;DR: Shopify statistics at a glance
Shopify merchants processed $216.3 billion in gross merchandise volume (GMV) in the first half of 2026, 33% more than a year earlier, and Shopify estimates its merchants captured more than 14% of US ecommerce in 2025. Payments, B2B, enterprise migrations and AI-referred orders are all growing faster than US online retail, which rose 12.2% in Q2 2026.
-
$115.6 billion in Q2 2026 GMV, up 32% year over year, per Shopify's August 2026 earnings release.
-
More than 14% of US ecommerce sales ran through Shopify merchants in 2025, by Shopify's Census-based estimate.
-
1,230,214 live Shopify stores operate in the United States, according to Store Leads (October 23, 2026).
-
More than 21,000 apps were listed in the Shopify App Store at the end of 2025, per Shopify's FY2025 annual filings.
-
$14.6 billion in Black Friday Cyber Monday 2025 sales, up 27% from 2024.
Between April and June 2026, Shopify merchants sold $115.6 billion worth of goods. That single quarter equals about two-thirds of what the platform processed in all of 2021, roughly $175 billion. US store counts range from 1.2 million to 3.9 million, and market-share claims range from more than 14% by sales value to 23.3% by detected US ecommerce sites.
This guide to Shopify statistics covers GMV and revenue, the three market share numbers and why they disagree, merchant and Shopify Plus data, the App Store economy, AI commerce, BFCM 2025 and Shopify Capital, with a US lens throughout. Every figure names its source and method. The financial data has been procured from Shopify's SEC filings and other credible sources.
How big is Shopify in 2026? GMV, revenue and profit statistics
Shopify merchants processed $216.3 billion in GMV in H1 2026: $100.7 billion in Q1 and $115.6 billion in Q2. Revenue reached $6.75 billion over the same six months, up 34%, while operating income rose 76% to $870 million.

Shopify GMV statistics by quarter, Q1 2025 to Q2 2026
| Quarter | GMV | YoY GMV growth | Revenue |
| Q1 2025 | $74.8B | 23% | $2.36B |
| Q2 2025 | $87.8B | 31% | $2.68B |
| Q3 2025 | $92.0B | 32% | $2.84B |
| Q4 2025 | $123.8B | 31% | $3.67B |
| Q1 2026 | $100.7B | 35% | $3.17B |
| Q2 2026 | $115.6B | 32% | $3.58B |
Shopify earned $1.47 billion in operating income in FY2025, up from $1.08 billion in 2024, per its FY2025 results.
Free cash flow reached $2.0 billion in FY2025 at a 17% margin, then $654 million in Q2 2026 at an 18% margin.
Monthly recurring revenue (MRR) stood at $221 million on June 30, 2026, up 19% from $185 million a year earlier.
Merchant solutions, which include payments, Capital and partner fees, produced $2.78 billion of Q2 2026 revenue, nearly 78% of the total. Subscriptions added $802 million.
Q1 2026 was Shopify's second straight quarter above $100 billion in GMV. CFO Jeff Hoffmeister summed it up in the Q1 release: "That is the platform compounding."
Shopify grew GMV faster in 2025 (29%) than in 2023 (20%) on a base 1.6 times larger, which is rare for a platform this size and hard to square with the idea that its growth was a pandemic effect. The trade-off sits in the revenue mix. As payments outgrow subscriptions, Shopify's revenue tracks merchant sales more closely, so a weak holiday season would hit it harder than it would a pure software vendor.
What is Shopify's US ecommerce market share?
Shopify merchants accounted for more than 14% of US ecommerce sales in 2025, based on Shopify's FY2025 results, which pair US Census Bureau data with Shopify's US GMV. By website count the share is higher: BuiltWith detects Shopify on 23.3% of US sites running ecommerce technology.
Shopify market share 2026: three numbers and what each measures
| Metric | Figure | What it measures | Source |
| US ecommerce sales share | More than 14% (2025) | US GMV of Shopify merchants, excluding POS, as a share of Census-measured US ecommerce sales | Shopify FY2025 results |
| US site share | 23% | Shopify sites as a share of US websites with detectable ecommerce technology | BuiltWith US distribution |
| Global site share | 20% | The same site-based measure across BuiltWith's worldwide index | BuiltWith global distribution |
The gap comes down to what gets counted. Site share treats a one-product store with no sales the same as Barnes & Noble, so it rewards Shopify's very large base of small merchants. Sales share weights every store by the dollars it moves, which is why it lands lower. BuiltWith's denominator also includes Wix and Squarespace sites with a cart button, many of which barely sell.
If you are sizing a market for a product or service, use the 14% figure. If you are estimating how many storefronts a tool could install on, the site share is the better guide. Roundups of Shopify statistics that quote "market share" without saying which one are mixing the two.
US retail ecommerce reached $340.2 billion in Q2 2026, up 12.2% year over year and 17.1% of all retail sales, the US Census Bureau's quarterly e-commerce report shows.
Shopify's North America GMV grew 28% in Q2 2026, more than double the pace of US online sales. North America includes Canada, so read this as directional evidence of share gains.
eMarketer forecasts that Amazon will hold close to 40% of US retail ecommerce through 2028. Next to Shopify's 14%, two companies touch a little over half of US online spending. The two estimates use different methods, so treat the combined figure as approximate.
How many merchants and stores use Shopify in 2026?
Store Leads counts 3,189,133 live Shopify stores worldwide and 1,230,214 in the United States as of October 23, 2026. BuiltWith detects 6.77 million live sites, 3.91 million of them in the US. Shopify itself discloses only "millions of merchants" in more than 175 countries, 44% based in the US.
Shopify merchant statistics: store counts by source and method
| Source | Global | United States | What it counts | Date |
| Shopify Annual Filings | "Millions of merchants" | 44% of merchants | Unique shops paying for a subscription | Dec 31, 2025 |
| Store Leads | 3,189,133 | 1,230,214 | Live stores with a verified storefront | Oct 23, 2026 |
| BuiltWith | 6,772,983 | 3,913,009 | Live websites with Shopify code detected | Accessed Oct 28, 2026 |
| BuiltWith, live plus expired | 14,100,619 | Not published | Every site ever detected on Shopify | Accessed Oct 28, 2026 |
US Shopify stores grew 15% year over year in Q3 2026, matching the global rate, per Store Leads' US report.
Apparel stores make up 29.1% of US Shopify stores, followed by home and garden at 12.6% and beauty and fitness at 10.6%.
California hosts 188,959 Shopify stores, ahead of Florida (119,598) and Texas (102,968).
In the 90 days to October 23, 2026, Store Leads saw 28,126 stores move to Shopify and 21,922 leave, a net gain of 6,204. WooCommerce was the largest source (9,563) and custom-built carts the largest destination (9,422).
Recent arrivals include Barnes & Noble from Oracle Commerce and Canada Goose from Salesforce Commerce Cloud. Recent departures include General Motors and Quince, both to custom builds.
For US prospecting, 1.23 million live stores is the realistic universe, while the 3.9 million figure picks up parked domains, test stores and redirects. The migration flow tells you more than either count: Shopify still wins more stores than it loses, and its losses skew toward large brands building their own stack.
Shopify Plus statistics
Shopify does not publish a Shopify Plus merchant count, so every Plus figure in circulation is a third-party estimate.
Store Leads counts 81,794 Shopify Plus domains worldwide and 29,657 in the US (October 2026). Domains overstate merchants, since one brand can run several regional storefronts.
BuiltWith detects 116,499 live sites on Shopify Plus.
Plus starts at $2,300 per month on a three-year term or $2,500 on a one-year term.
Most merchants subscribe to Basic and Grow plans, yet most of Shopify's GMV comes from Plus and enterprise merchants, Shopify states in its FY2025 Form 10-K.
B2B GMV grew 96% in 2025, 80% in Q1 2026 and 76% in Q2 2026. On April 2, 2026, Shopify extended core B2B features, including company profiles, up to three catalogs and payment terms, to Basic, Grow and Advanced plans.
Merchants that reached $1 million in annual GMV showed 92% retention over five years, rising to 97% at $10 million, Shopify said on its Q2 2026 call.
Shopify Payments GMV Share
68% of Shopify's Q2 2026 GMV, or $78.1 billion, ran through Shopify Payments, up from 64% ($56.6 billion) a year earlier.
Shopify Payments penetration, Q2 2025 to Q2 2026
| Quarter | Payments penetration | GMV processed by Shopify Payments |
| Q2 2025 | 64% | $56.6B |
| Q1 2026 | 67% | $67B |
| Q2 2026 | 68% | $78.1B |
Shop Pay, Shopify's accelerated checkout, processed $35 billion in Q1 2026, up 59%, per Zacks' Q1 summary, and grew 53% in Q2. Each point of penetration is now worth about $1.2 billion of quarterly GMV that Shopify processes itself. For merchants, Shopify's revenue increasingly grows with your sales as well as your plan fee.
How US Shopify stores ship orders
16.4% of US Shopify stores show USPS on their site, according to Store Leads, ahead of UPS at 10.4% and FedEx at 7.3%. Store Leads only detects carriers a store exposes, so treat these as lower bounds.
Growing US brands rarely stay with one carrier for long. Many layer branded shipment tracking and delivery-exception workflows on top of Shopify's order status page, so customers get one consistent experience whichever carrier picks up the box.
How fast is AI commerce growing on Shopify?
Orders from AI-powered search on Shopify stores grew nearly 13 times year over year in Q1 2026, and AI-driven traffic and orders tripled in Q2 2026, according to Shopify's earnings calls as reported by PYMNTS. These are orders arriving through AI search and agent channels, separate from merchants' own use of AI tools.
Shopify statistics on AI commerce, 2026
| Metric | Figure | Period |
| AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores | 8x year over year | Q1 2026 |
| Orders from AI-powered searches | Nearly 13x year over year | Q1 2026 |
| AI-driven traffic and orders | 3x year over year | Q2 2026 |
| New-buyer order rate from AI channels | Nearly 2x other channels | Q2 2026 |
| AI-attributed orders outside Shopify's top 100 categories | 75% | Q2 2026 |
| Sidekick merchant conversations | Nearly 34 million | Q2 2026 |
| Sidekick daily active merchants | 3.6x year over year | Q2 2026 |
| Custom apps built with Sidekick | 36,000 (12,000 in Q1) | Q2 2026 |
| Weekly active shops using Sidekick | About 4x year over year | Q1 2026 |
Sources: Shopify Q1 and Q2 2026 earnings calls, via PYMNTS, Retail TouchPoints and Digital Commerce 360.
Shopify's leadership is not shy about the bet. On the Q2 call, President Harley Finkelstein said "Shopify is probably the most AI-pilled company in the world," a line he attributed to AI model developers, Retail TouchPoints reported. He was also candid that "the volume from agentic commerce is still small relative to our massive GMV," as Digital Commerce 360 reported.
We read the 13x and 3x figures as growth on a small base. Shopify has not disclosed AI-channel GMV in dollars, so these numbers show direction rather than size. The 75% long-tail figure matters more for brands, because AI agents are surfacing niche products that rarely win a traditional search results page. Sidekick's onboarding guidance also lifted the share of new merchants reaching five orders within 15 days by 8%, an early sign that AI is changing merchant activation as well as shopping.
How many apps are in the Shopify App Store?
The Shopify App Store held more than 21,000 apps on December 31, 2025, according to Shopify's FY2025 filings, up from more than 16,000 a year earlier. An independent June 2026 snapshot by RevenueHunt counted 22,546 live listings, most of which have little traction.
Shopify App Store statistics: the app funnel, June 2026 (RevenueHunt snapshot)
-
22,546 live apps, roughly 10 times the 2020 count, with more than 6,000 added in the past 12 months.
-
About 11,040 apps (49%) have at least one review. The other 51% have none, and 81% have fewer than 10.
-
About 36% of apps appear to earn any revenue at all (estimated).
-
1,502 apps (6.7%) carry the Built for Shopify badge.
-
225 apps, the top 1%, take an estimated 72% of all App Store revenue, and the top 10 take nearly 30%.
RevenueHunt models revenue from public pricing and usage signals without access to billing data, so treat the revenue tiers as directional. Store Leads adds another lens: 19,866 vendors have published 32,165 apps over time, and the most installed, Judge.me, sits on 20.3% of Shopify stores, followed by Klaviyo at 14.3%.
Shopify app developer revenue share in 2026
| Developer situation | Shopify's share |
| First $1M of lifetime gross app revenue | 0% |
| Gross app revenue above $1M | 15% |
| $20M+ in prior-year App Store earnings, or $100M+ company revenue | 15% on all app revenue |
| One-time App Store registration | $19 per Partner account |
Historically, the $1M 0% revenue share tier reset annually. Effective June 16, 2025, Shopify shifted to a cumulative lifetime cap, counting all gross app revenue generated on or after January 1, 2025 toward that initial $1M threshold before the 15% rate applies. Shopify changed it to a lifetime threshold, which removes an annual saving worth up to $150,000 for any developer earning more than $1 million a year.
Shopify paid partners $1.3 billion in 2025 across apps, themes, store builds and referrals, and counts more than 100,000 partners.
Shipping and fulfillment is the most crowded app category, with 3,841 apps, yet only 28% have 10 or more reviews, per RevenueHunt.
Distribution decides who earns here. Half the store has never earned a review, and 225 apps collect most of the money, so a new app competes for attention long before it competes on features. In shipping and tracking, merchants consolidate on a few trusted tools because a broken label or tracking feed is visible to every customer.
What were Shopify's BFCM 2025 results?
Shopify merchants sold $14.6 billion over Black Friday Cyber Monday 2025, up 27% from $11.5 billion in 2024 (24% in constant currency), according to Shopify's BFCM announcement filed with the SEC. Sales peaked at $5.1 million per minute at 12:01 p.m. ET on Black Friday.
Shopify BFCM sales, 2024 vs 2025
| Metric | BFCM 2024 | BFCM 2025 |
| Global merchant sales | $11.5B | $14.6B |
| Year-over-year growth | n/a | 27% (24% constant currency) |
-
81 million-plus customers bought from Shopify-powered brands over the weekend.
-
First sales: more than 15,800 entrepreneurs made their first sale on Shopify during BFCM 2025.
-
Record days: over 94,900 merchants had their highest-selling day ever.
-
32% of orders used Shop Pay, and Shop Pay sales rose 39% year over year.
The 27% weekend growth roughly matched Shopify's 29% full-year GMV growth, so peak season did not outrun the rest of the year. The 15,800 first-time sellers matter more for Shopify's pipeline than the headline total, since each one is a future subscription and payments customer.
How big is Shopify Capital?
Shopify held $2.18 billion in net loans and merchant cash advances on June 30, 2026, up 37% from $1.60 billion a year earlier, its Q2 2026 balance sheet shows. That line is the clearest public measure of the Shopify Capital book.
The balance stood at $2.10 billion on March 31, 2026, $1.78 billion at the end of 2025 and $1.22 billion at the end of 2024, per Shopify's Q2 2025 and later filings.
Transaction and loan losses rose to $141 million in Q2 2026 from $80 million a year earlier, a 76% increase. Shopify Capital was the largest driver, per Zacks.
Starting April 2026, Shopify reports merchant cash advance cash flows within investing activities, alongside loans.
Capital is among the stickiest products Shopify sells, because a merchant repaying an advance through daily sales is unlikely to switch platforms mid-term. The cost shows up in the loss line. Losses grew about twice as fast as the loan book in Q2 2026, which is the number to watch if US consumer spending slows.
What do these Shopify statistics mean for you?
For SaaS founders and app developers
Size your US market on Store Leads' 1.23 million live stores; BuiltWith's 3.9 million includes parked and test domains. Expect a winner-takes-most store where 225 apps earn an estimated 72% of revenue, and budget for distribution before features. Model your margins on a lifetime $1 million exemption followed by 15%. Then build for AI agents, since 75% of AI-attributed orders already land outside Shopify's top 100 categories.
For ecommerce agencies
Shopify paid partners $1.3 billion in 2025, and more than 100,000 partners compete for that work. Migrations are the clearest opening: Shopify netted 6,204 stores from rival platforms in 90 days, including Barnes & Noble. B2B is the second, now that core features sit on every paid plan and B2B GMV grew 76% in Q2 2026.
For enterprise and B2B leaders
Plus costs $2,300 a month on a three-year term, and most of Shopify's GMV already comes from Plus and enterprise merchants. Retention at the top is high, at 97% over five years for merchants above $10 million in GMV. If wholesale is a side channel, the April 2026 change may remove the need for Plus; unlimited catalogs, deposits and partial payments still require it.
What is the outlook for Shopify in 2026?
Shopify's August 2026 outlook calls for Q3 2026 revenue to grow at a low-thirties percentage rate, with a free cash flow margin in the high teens to low twenties. Q3 results are scheduled for November 3, 2026. Full-year GMV looks set to pass $430 billion.
FY2026 Shopify GMV scenarios (ClickPost projections; Shopify gives no GMV guidance)
| Scenario | H2 2026 GMV | FY2026 GMV |
| Flat: H2 2026 equals H2 2025 | $215.9B | $432.2B |
| H1 pace: H2 grows 33% year over year | $287.1B | $503.4B |
Projection: ClickPost calculation from SEC-reported H1 2026 GMV ($216.3B) and H2 2025 GMV ($215.9B).
Shopify guided Q3 2026 operating expenses to 33% to 34% of revenue and stock-based compensation to $150 million.
eMarketer projects Amazon will hold close to 40% of US retail ecommerce through 2028 (projection).
The Census Bureau's Q3 2026 ecommerce estimate, due in November, will show whether Shopify's North American growth keeps outpacing the US market.
Which Shopify trends matter most in 2026?
AI shopping channels are small but compounding
3x: AI-driven orders to Shopify stores tripled year over year in Q2 2026, after a nearly 13x jump in AI-search orders in Q1. Shopify says its Catalog structures more than 1 billion products for AI agents, and that agentic transactions carry the same economics as online store orders. For brands, clean product data is now a sales channel requirement.
Enterprise and luxury replatforming keeps flowing
6,204: Shopify's net gain in stores from rival platforms over the 90 days to October 23, 2026, per Store Leads. Shopify signed Mulberry, Balmain and LVMH in Q1 2026, executives said on the Q1 call. The counter-trend is real too, with GM and Quince moving to custom builds.
B2B commerce moves down-market
76%: Shopify's B2B GMV growth in Q2 2026, after 96% growth across 2025. Shopify still describes B2B as a very small share of total GMV, so this is a fast-growing line from a low starting point. The April 2026 plan change opens it to millions of non-Plus merchants.
Payments and lending now drive revenue
78%: the share of Shopify's Q2 2026 revenue that came from merchant solutions, led by payments. With 68% payments penetration and a $2.18 billion Capital book, Shopify behaves more like a fintech platform each quarter, which ties its results more closely to consumer spending.

Conclusion: what Shopify's 2026 numbers add up to
Read together, the 2026 Shopify statistics show a platform whose growth has sped up at scale, from 20% GMV growth in 2023 to 33% in H1 2026, while its revenue shifts toward payments and lending (merchant solutions made up nearly 78% of Q2 revenue). AI shopping is the wildcard, growing quickly from a base Shopify has yet to put a dollar figure on.
The next checkpoint is the Q3 2026 report on November 3. The two disclosures worth looking for are a first dollar figure for AI-channel GMV and whether Capital losses keep outpacing the loan book. We update these Shopify statistics after every earnings release, using Shopify's SEC filings, Store Leads, BuiltWith and the US Census Bureau.
Our take
For US brands, the number that matters is the 14% sales share. Store counts tell you how crowded the platform is; the sales share tells you where shoppers already are. The trade-off is dependence: the more of your checkout, payments and financing run through Shopify, the more your costs move with your volume.
If your Shopify store ships with more than one carrier, ClickPost is the post-purchase platform brands graduate to, with tracking, delivery exceptions and returns built for ecommerce ops teams. Book a demo with ClickPost to see it on your own order data.
Frequently asked questions about Shopify statistics
How many merchants does Shopify have in 2026?
3,189,133 live Shopify stores operate worldwide, according to Store Leads (October 23, 2026), including 1,230,214 in the US. BuiltWith detects 6.77 million live sites because it counts any domain carrying Shopify code. Shopify's own Form 10-K says only that it serves millions of merchants in more than 175 countries.
What is Shopify's market share in the US?
More than 14% of US ecommerce sales went through Shopify merchants in 2025, according to Shopify's Census-based estimate. Measured by websites instead of dollars, BuiltWith puts Shopify on 23.3% of US sites with ecommerce technology. Use the 14% figure for revenue or market sizing and the site share for estimating reach.
What percentage of US ecommerce does Shopify power?
More than 14% of US online sales by value ran through Shopify merchants in 2025. For scale, US retail ecommerce reached $340.2 billion in Q2 2026, or 17.1% of all retail, per the Census Bureau. With eMarketer projecting Amazon near 40%, the two companies together account for a little over half of US online spending.
