Get a USPS rate estimate in four steps
No account, no login, no friction. Enter your package details and instantly compare USPS rates across every service level, with retail and commercial pricing side by side.
-
1 Step 1
Enter origin ZIP
Type the 5-digit ZIP code where USPS will pick up or accept your package. This determines your origin SCF (Sectional Center Facility) and starting zone.
-
2 Step 2
Enter destination ZIP
Provide the destination ZIP. The tool maps it to USPS's zone matrix (1–9) — local same-SCF lanes are cheapest, coast-to-coast Zone 9 routes carry the highest rates.
-
3 Step 3
Add weight & dimensions
Enter weight in pounds and optional dimensions in inches. USPS applies dimensional weight (L×W×H÷166) only when your package exceeds 1 cubic foot — otherwise actual weight applies.
-
4 Step 4
Pick your pricing tier
Choose Commercial (via Shopify, Pirate Ship, eBay) for 10–40% off retail, or Retail (USPS.com counter rates). Commercial pricing is essentially mandatory for any volume eCommerce seller.
Six USPS service types compared

Eight factors that determine USPS shipping cost
USPS shipping costs are determined by more than weight and distance. Understanding these eight variables helps you choose the right service, plan shipments accurately, and avoid surprise charges at scale.
-
Factor 01
Service tier selected
The biggest single lever. Priority Mail Express runs ~6× the cost of Ground Advantage for the same package. Express ($28+/lb) vs. Priority ($8–9/lb) vs. Ground Advantage ($4.50/lb) reflects the speed premium — match the tier to actual customer expectations.
-
Factor 02
Origin & destination zone
USPS uses 9 zones based on distance between ZIPs. Zone 1 (same SCF) is cheapest; Zone 9 (cross-country, Hawaii, Alaska, PR) is most expensive. The same Priority Mail 1-lb package can cost $8 in Zone 1 vs. $17 in Zone 9 — over 2× variation.
-
Factor 03
Actual vs. dimensional weight
USPS applies DIM weight (L×W×H÷166) only when your package exceeds 1 cubic foot (1,728 in³). Below that, actual weight applies. The 166 divisor is more favorable than UPS/FedEx's 139. Keep boxes under 12×12×12 in. to avoid DIM entirely.
-
Factor 04
Retail vs. commercial pricing
Commercial rates (via Shopify, Pirate Ship, eBay, Stamps.com) are 10–40% cheaper than USPS.com retail. A Priority Mail 1 lb Zone 5 might cost $13.50 retail vs. $10.20 commercial. Never pay retail for any meaningful volume.
-
Factor 05
Flat Rate vs. zone-based
Flat Rate boxes/envelopes ignore weight and zone — fixed price. Worth it for heavy items (5+ lbs) shipping to Zones 6–9. A 20-lb package coast-to-coast costs $22.45 in a Large Flat Rate Box vs. $80+ via zone-based Priority Mail.
-
Factor 06
Cubic pricing eligibility
Priority Mail Cubic prices small dense items (under 20 lbs, 0.5 cubic feet) by tier — not by weight. Available only via commercial shipping platforms. A 15-lb item in a 0.2 cubic foot box might run $9–12 via Cubic vs. $20+ via standard Priority Mail.
-
Factor 07
Package type & extras
Tubes, irregular shapes, and oversized packages (over 108 in. combined length + girth) trigger non-machinable surcharges of $4–22 per piece. Signature confirmation, Adult Signature, and Hold for Pickup add $3–10 each. Choose carefully at checkout.
-
Factor 08
Annual rate adjustments
USPS adjusts rates every January. Recent years have averaged 6–8% increases. Build buffer into your pricing model and review carrier costs quarterly. Commercial rate increases sometimes lag retail — monitor both columns when reforecasting.
Key USPS pricing formulas
USPS uses different billing mechanics for weight, dimensional weight, and Flat Rate calculations. Here are the core formulas every eCommerce shipper should know.
-
Dimensional Weight
USPS DIM weight calculation
Volume = L × W × H (in inches)
If Volume > 1,728 in³ (1 ft³):
DIM Wt = Volume ÷ 166
Charged Wt = MAX(Actual, DIM)
166 = USPS DIM divisor
139 = UPS/FedEx divisor (less favorable)
-
Zone-Based Cost
Standard zone pricing
Cost = Base Rate(Service, Zone)
× Weight Slab
+ Surcharges (if applicable)
× (1 - Commercial Discount)
Zone 1 = same SCF, cheapest
Zone 9 = HI/AK/PR, highest rates
-
Flat Rate Decision
When Flat Rate wins
If Zone-Based Cost > Flat Rate:
Use Flat Rate Box
Crossover: ~5 lbs to Zone 6+
or 20+ lbs to any zone
Small Box $10.40 retail / $8.45 commercial
Large Box $22.45 retail / $18.40 commercial
Understanding USPS shipping zones
USPS zones run from 1 to 9 and are determined by the distance between origin and destination ZIP codes. The further the zone, the higher the rate. Zone pricing applies across all weight-based services, but not Flat Rate, where distance is irrelevant.
USPS shipping rates by service & zone
Indicative USPS shipping rates for a 1 lb package. Commercial rates (via Shopify, Pirate Ship, eBay) are 10–40% cheaper than USPS.com retail rates.

* Approximate 2025 retail rates. USPS adjusts rates annually in January. Commercial rates require shipping through a USPS-integrated platform (Shopify, eBay, Pirate Ship, Stamps.com, ShipStation). Dimensional weight pricing applies to packages over 1 cubic foot.
USPS Flat Rate options
One price regardless of weight or zone. Free packaging supplied by USPS. Best value for heavy items traveling long distances.
| Flat Rate Option | Retail Price | Commercial Price | Max Weight | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flat Rate Envelope | $10.10 | $7.90 | 70 lbs | Documents, thin items, clothing |
| Padded Flat Rate Envelope | $10.60 | $8.45 | 70 lbs | Small electronics, jewelry, fragile |

* Flat Rate ignores weight and zone — pay one price up to 70 lbs. Free boxes from USPS.com or your local post office. Commercial pricing requires a shipping platform.
Eight ways to reduce USPS shipping spend
Proven tactics that help eCommerce sellers cut USPS shipping costs by 20–40% without compromising delivery experience.
-
1↓ 10–40%
Always use commercial pricing
Never pay retail USPS rates. Ship via Shopify, Pirate Ship, eBay, Stamps.com, or any USPS-integrated platform to access commercial rates — 10–40% off retail. A Priority Mail package at $14 retail costs $10.50 commercial. At 500 packages/month, that's ~$1,750 saved monthly.
-
2↓ $5–25/shipment
Master the Flat Rate breakpoint
For heavy items to distant zones, Flat Rate saves big. A 10 lb package NY → CA via zone-based Priority Mail costs ~$25+, but only $10.40 in a Small Flat Rate Box (if it fits). Know the weight/zone crossover for each Flat Rate option.
-
3↓ 30–50%
Use Ground Advantage for non-urgent
Ground Advantage replaced First-Class Package and Retail Ground in 2023. Cheapest option for 1–70 lb packages when 2–5 day delivery is acceptable. Includes tracking and $100 insurance. Saves 30–50% vs. Priority Mail on most routes.
-
4Free pickup
Schedule free USPS pickups
USPS offers free daily Package Pickup from your address for Priority Mail and Express (commercial included). No drop-off trips needed. Schedule at usps.com/pickup or via your shipping platform. Saves time and gas every day.
-
5↓ $6–10/shipment
Use Cubic pricing for small heavy items
Priority Mail Cubic prices small dense items (under 20 lbs, fits in 0.5 cubic feet) by dimension tier rather than weight. Commercial-only. A 15 lb item in a small box runs $8–12 via Cubic vs. $18+ via standard Priority Mail. Ideal for dense products.
-
6↓ Up to 60%
Leverage Media Mail for books/media
If you sell books, CDs, DVDs, or educational materials, Media Mail is unbeatable — $4.63 for 1 lb to anywhere in the US. For a 5 lb book set, Media Mail costs ~$6.40 vs. $12+ via Ground Advantage. Massive savings for media sellers.
-
7↓ 15–20%
Use Regional Rate boxes
Regional Rate boxes (A and B sizes) offer discounted rates for closer zones (1–4). For shipments within your region, Regional Rate can be 15–20% cheaper than standard Priority Mail and even cheaper than Flat Rate for moderate-weight items. Commercial-only.
-
8Avoid DIM
Right-size packaging to dodge DIM
USPS only applies dimensional weight to packages over 1 cubic foot (1,728 in³) — more generous than UPS/FedEx (which apply DIM to all packages). Keep boxes under 12×12×12 in. to avoid DIM weight charges entirely. Right-size for the product.
Use the calculator at the top of this page. Enter origin ZIP, destination ZIP, package weight, and dimensions — you'll see Ground Advantage, Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, and Flat Rate options side by side. No USPS account needed, and rates shown are the public retail prices.
For packages under 1 lb, USPS wins on price by a wide margin — often $4–$8 vs $10–$15 from UPS or FedEx. For 1–5 lb shipments, USPS Priority Mail and UPS Ground are usually within $2–$3 of each other. Above 5 lbs and longer distances, UPS and FedEx Ground tend to undercut USPS. The other tradeoff: UPS and FedEx have better tracking and guaranteed delivery; USPS reaches every address in the country including PO boxes.
USPS Ground Advantage at around $4.50–$6.50 retail, with 2–5 day delivery — it replaced First-Class Package in 2023 for sellers. If you sign up for Commercial Pricing through a platform like Pirate Ship or Stamps.com, that same shipment drops to $3.80–$5.20. For envelopes and very thin items, USPS First-Class Mail is even cheaper at $0.73 for a standard letter.
USPS raised prices in January 2026, with Ground Advantage and Priority Mail going up roughly 7–9% on average. Flat Rate box prices saw smaller increases (3–5%), and First-Class Mail forever stamps went up by a few cents. The increases were sharper than the typical 4–5% USPS does, so if you're budgeting for 2026, build in the higher number.
Ground Advantage is the cheaper option at $4.50–$15 for most parcels under 10 lbs, delivering in 2–5 business days. Priority Mail runs $8–$25 for the same packages with 1–3 day delivery. Both include $100 insurance and tracking. Rule of thumb: pick Ground Advantage if 4-day delivery is fine, Priority if your customer needs it faster or it's going coast-to-coast where the time difference matters more.
Both, depending on the package. For boxes under 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches), USPS bills by actual weight only. Above that threshold, USPS applies dimensional weight using a divisor of 166 — so a 20×20×20 inch box weighing 5 lbs gets billed at 48 lbs. The fix is staying under that 1 cubic foot threshold whenever possible, or switching to a Flat Rate box where size doesn't matter.
USPS Ground Advantage for items 10–20 lbs typically runs $12–$30 depending on zone, beating Priority Mail by $5–$15 on the same shipment. For dense heavy items (over 7 lbs in a small box), Priority Mail Flat Rate Large Box at $22.45 retail (around $18.40 commercial) often beats both — especially for cross-country shipments where weight-based pricing climbs fast.
Sometimes — depends on weight and distance. Flat Rate is cheaper when you're shipping heavy items (over 5 lbs) cross-country (Zone 7–8). For light items or short distances (under Zone 4), regular weight-based pricing usually wins. Quick test: anything heavier than 5 lbs going more than 1,000 miles, check Flat Rate first. Anything lighter or shorter, weight-based is almost always cheaper.
Coast-to-coast, 5 lb package: USPS Ground Advantage runs $14–$18 (3–5 days), USPS Priority Mail $20–$26 (2–3 days). UPS Ground is $18–$25 (4–5 days), FedEx Ground similar at $17–$24. For commercial/business addresses, UPS and FedEx get cheaper; for residential, USPS usually wins. Add 15–18% fuel surcharge to UPS and FedEx numbers — USPS doesn't charge fuel surcharge.
Yes, meaningfully — typically 15–25% off retail USPS prices because both platforms give you Commercial Pricing without needing a USPS business account. Pirate Ship is free with no monthly fee; Stamps.com runs around $20/month but has more features. For sellers shipping more than 20 packages a month, either one pays for itself within the first week. The savings are real, not marketing.
